  Welcome to the web site of the
Sketch-Based Modelling group REGEO!

  Who Are We?

We are a research group interested in Sketch-Based Modelling. If you want to know something more about us, you can visit the detailed list of the people in the group.

Currently, the group is linked to the Institute of New Imaging Technologies.

The group headquarters is located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Construction, in the building TC of the Science and Technology area in the Riu Sec campus of Jaume I University

If you are interested, you can get information about how to get at our headquarters, or you can contact us by e-mail.

What Are We Doing?

The present objective of the group is to obtain an  automatic (or at least, easy to use) application to produce models from sketches, i.e. to automatically generate virtual 3D models from 2D sketches. In fact, we conceive it merely as a necessary step towards a more ambitious objective:  converting standardized technical drawings into input language for Design applications

Sketch-Based Modelling is a small part of the Artificial Vision, or Computer Vision field. In Sketch-Based Modelling the input concerns both geometric figures in 2D and the standardized symbols used in engineering drawings; and the output consists of geometric 3D models like the ones used  by  CAD/CAM/CAE applications.

Thus, Sketh-Based Modelling is not only a numerical process based on geometric rules. The geometric information contained in the figures is usually  incomplete. This is why the 2D figures must " be perceived " by the computer (in the psychological sense of the term " perception "). In addition to that, the possible existence of standardized symbols (such as geometric conditions and dimensions) forces the language " to be interpreted", and also allows for incorporating the information in the corresponding model.

Therefore, keywords that describe our general objective are: Sketch-Based Modelling, Geometric Reconstruction, Automatic 3D Modeling, Automatic Perception and Graphical Language. And the  UNESCO classification for our  working field is: 1203.9.

We conceive the general objective described above as a  necessary step to reach the most ambitious objective of generating a graphical language for communication between the human being and the computer. In particular, our interest is focuses on the interaction between designers and CAD applications. The reason is that we do believe that automatic virtual-model generation from standardized drawings is the most efficient way to establish a fluid communication between designers and CAD applications. In this challenge, 3D reconstruction of design models from engineering drawings is a main step; as important and encouraging as pen computing, symbol interpretation and other related aspects. Click in the next hiperlink to know more details about Sketch-Based Modelling .

We have developed our proposed general Objective  in two programmatic aims, as follows:

  • To integrate the initial phases of design in the CAD/CAM/CAE systems;
  • To get automatic modelling from engineering drawings.

What will you find in this site?

In addition to general information on whom we are and what we are currently engaged in (contained in this same page), in other pages of this site you will also find detailed information on the group "activities" (to sum up, on the projects recently developed and/or those being developed at the moment , and the software and documents generated by the group). You will also find information on some sites, related to Sketch-Based Modelling, that we do consider of interest.

We hope you enjoy your visit,
and you can find what you were looking for !
